EMMANUEL JAL RELEASES NEW MUSIC VIDEO: ‘SCARS’ WITH NELLY FURTADO
AND EMBARKS ON EASTERN CANADA TOUR WITH XAVIER RUDD
‘When Nelly and I were writing this song together, she suggested the theme of ‘Scars’ and I knew immediately that this was something that I could draw on from my story as a child soldier growing up in South Sudan. However this is also a song with a universal feel to it, something we can all touch on with our own experiences, growing up and going through life.” – Emmanuel Jal
“I feel like Emmanuel and I have known each other since we were children, and the song has a child-like theme to it. Even though we weren’t friends as children, it was like we almost rediscovered some type of connection through song. Scars are what we can all relate to: the common human experience of pain, which every human being feels. I like to focus on the sameness we have as humans rather than the differences we have as individuals.“ – Nelly Furtado
EMMANUEL JAL, the Toronto based Hip Hop Artist was born into the life of a child solider in South Sudan. Through unbelievable struggles, Emmanuel managed to survive and go on to emerge as a recording artist, achieving worldwide acclaim for his unique style of hip hop with its message of peace and reconciliation born out of his personal experiences.
The video for ‘Scars’ was shot on location in the slums of Kibera, Kenya by celebrated Canadian director Daniel Palmer with ‘The Field’, and funded by MUCH FACT. The video premiered through MUCH MUSIC on Monday 26th October before being released worldwide today, Monday 2nd November, ahead of Emmanuel’s tour with Xavier Rudd, which kicks off on Tuesday 3rd November throughout Eastern Canada.

Emmanuel Jal’s JUNO nominated fifth studio album “The Key” was released on September 9, 2014 on Gatwitch / Universal. The 13 track album includes collaborations with Grammy award winning artists Nile Rodgers (who produced the lead single “My Power”) and Nelly Furtado (who appears on the duet “Scars” and “Party”). “The Key” is Jal’s most ambitious and sonically adventurous music project to date. Two songs from Emmanuel’s album (“Scars” and “We Fall”) also feature on the Warner Brothers’ soundtrack from ‘The Good Lie’.
“The Key” is not only an album, but at its core is a joint partnership between the album’s co- executive producer and noted entrepreneur Paul Lindley (Ella’s Kitchen) who both not only wanted to shine a light on children’s rights throughout the album, but also outside of the recording booth through their offshoot social enterprise The Key is E which invests in African entrepreneurs who support children. www.thekeyise.com
Emmanuel’s music has always been entrenched in African sounds and activism, whether it be calling on ‘We Want Peace’ in South Sudan with the support of heavy weight activists such as Kofi Annan and Peter Gabriel, or ‘Lose to Win’ the song he created for its campaign of the same name which supports 3 charities which work in Kenya including his own “Gua Africa”. www.gua-africa.org. (Africa Yoga Project, My Start for FilmAid and Gua Africa: www.losetowin.net.)
At the core of Emmanuel and Nelly’s friendship and collaboration on ‘The Key’ and specifically ‘Scars’, is their mutual appreciation of the African continent and their passion for enriching education and empowerment for young people there. Nelly has built her own schools in Maasai Mara and has also worked closely alongside ‘Free The Children’ on her charity work in the region.
